| Two Hill Forts Sun 17th August 2014 Results

We managed to stay fairly dry for the second running of 2 Hillforts. In bright and breezy conditions,
a field of 46 runners took to the starting field beside the pub and sped off towards the heather-clad hills.
Soon the fields gave way to the start of the long climb up to Penylcoddiau and Martin Cliffe of Eryri led the field up
the initial road section. It was a lead he was to keep throughout, though he was chased hard by Pennine's Richard Houghton
who took 2nd. Buckley's Simon Edwards completed the top 3 in 73:05.
A strong finishing Vic Belshaw took 4th and the 1st M50
spot.
Then came the winning lady, Helsby's Jayne Joy in 5th – with her time of 74:06 breaking the ladies recording by over 3 minutes.
Second place in the womens race went to Pat Peers of Pensby, just ahead of Wirral's Caroline Hall in 3rd.
Other male category winners were
MOPEN Ben Fletcher (Delamere), M40 Kelvin Dickenson (Wirral) and M60 David Say (Denbigh).
Female category winners were FOPEN Alexandra Fletcher
(Eryri), F40 Louise Waywell (Pensby), F50 Kim Braznell (Mercia) and F60 June Morgan. Well done to everyone who negotiated a challenging route.

| Steam Bunny Bluff Saturday 9th August Results
A Smiling Sunny Mark Nelson (Mynydd Du) typifies the feeling on the day of the
first Steam Bunny Bluff. He didn't look like that at the end!!
So it's done. A new AL race for Wales, conceived, nurtured and developed over 9 months of brainstorming, has been delivered, shiny,
new and blinking in the sunlight, to an expectant group of 19 enthusiasts who turned out for this marathon in the Northern Black Mountains.
A stern word with Mother nature ensured that Hurricane Bertha cooled her heels for 12 hours before she unleashed rains of biblical proportions
the night following the race. As it was, conditions were sultry with occasional cooling downpours but perfect visibility for the stunning vistas
of Mid Wales from the northern escarpments.
Some new ideas were trialled for this race. The runners wore trackers and Sportident dibbers to check through the summit checkpoints.
Marshals were stationed in valley floor 'Safety Refuges' in teams with vehicle support. Satellite phones were used to link the Safety
Refuges to Race HQ. At Race HQ, the race progress was followed on a large screen showing the trackers display. Many thanks to Scottish
Hill Runners for accepting this race into their calendar.
James Blore set out at a determined pace that ensured he was never headed and he was unlucky not to break the 4 hours barrier, a failing
he attributed to some faffing about finding a good route off Waun Fach. However, he was lucky to survive a stewards enquiry for
self-administering an illegal stimulant after he was spotted grabbing an electric fence on the descent to Grwyne South. As Del-Boy
tutted afterwards 'fell runners...they ain't very bright are they?'
Despite being more than twice James' age, Steve Long never gave up his vain chase and actually clawed back 4 minutes on the young
buck ahead of him in the latter stages of the race ensuring that the honour of the Moderately Old Gits category of MV50 was upheld
in second place. Not sure what they put in the water in Tring but perhaps Steve should think of bottling it and selling it to fell
running hopefuls!
The next group of 3 runners provided much entertainment to the organising team who were watching 'interesting' lines on the tracking
website as all 3 of them cocked up the last descent from Hay Bluff, finally allowing the oldest of the group, David Powell, to hold
off two younger, dafter runners. The tracking actually provided the organisers with an insight into a new sport as runners could be
seen taking all kinds of lines during the event. The name Betfair was bandied about. Where is BOFRA when you need it??
'Retirement' has clearly suited Helen Fines who came home in 6th place, last of the sub-5 hour group, nearly an hour ahead of Susan
Clapham who packed well with her two Glossopdale Harriers colleagues to shoo them in for the first team category.
'Puffing Billy' John Darby put his local knowledge and grinding ability to good use to convincingly win the Definitely Old Gits
MV60 group.
On the whole, the new technology worked very well. The low numbers of competitors encouraged a cosy convivial atmosphere and
allowed old school ideas like sticky labels on a board to be used alongside the new tech, which reinforced the ethos of a 'return
to grass roots fellracing' for the runners. The organisers wish to thank the large party of willing and cheerful volunteers who
manned safety refuges, swept the course and ran the IT. As ever, an event like this would be impossible without them. At times,
it felt like a great family reunion!
And finally, a huge thank you to Fiona Howard, Headmistress of Hay on Wye Primary school for allowing the use of the school and
its car park for Race HQ. Quite magnificent!

It is almost 12 months since Pete passed away, and he has been missed, most publicly by the huge gap he left in the world of Welsh fellrunning photography. Along with Al being unwell we have lost a great a contribution to the sport.
At Pete’s own request no funeral was held, something which some people found strange, but his wishes were respected.
On Saturday 23rd August a memorial will take place for Pete immediately following the Tryfan Downhill Dash. The race time is to meet at 2pm, at which time those competing will climb to the summit, with the race starting when everyone gets there.
Pete thoroughly enjoyed the Tryfan Downhill, and in fact it was the last race he filmed and photographed before he passed away, and he used it to test a new lens he purchased that week.
This year, when everyone get’s/falls back down there will be a prizegiving and then at approx 3pm a simple celebration of Pete’s life and appreciation of the contribution he gave to people by way of a few words spoken.
Everyone welcome, regardless of whether you want to run this crazy race, or just watch the drama unfold and then pay your respects to Pete. If you feel you want to say something on the day feel to do so and let me know.

| Ras Arenig Fawr Sunday 3rd August 2014 Results
This was the tenth running of the Arenig Fawr race and the second year of the new and extended route. Arenig Fawr,
like a number of other hills in south Snowdonia, is isolated and surrounded by wild lowlands. Race headquarters is at a disused
railway siding, next to the old Arenig quarry. The lack of facilities is compensated for by a friendly and low key atmosphere with
food, cakes and refreshments included in a low entry fee. Radio communications, as always, were provided by ‘Team Dolly’,
the Welsh fell race radio cover group.
The extended course has been received very favourably by the participants, many of whom were surprised by the amount of
climb involved and the complexity of the route. In conditions of poor visibility, the need for careful navigation makes
this a race suitable only for experienced runners.
Of the 53 starters, 2 retired.
Next year the race will be run on Sunday August 2nd.

| Llanthony Show Hill Race 2014 Results
Heavy overnight rain made going very wet in places, and may have put off a few faint-hearted runners when it was still hissing down at breakfast time.
41 started the long haul up from the showground, with a largish contingent from Cardiff’s Les Croupiers who had nominated the event in their off-road championships.
It was indeed a Cardiff man who led the charge back into the arena, but Ben Moon is a Mynyddwyr de Cymru member. Second-place Richy Johnson is by contrast
a member of the rival South Wales fell club, Mynydd Du. From somewhat further afield, Wesley Smith of Launceston was third.
Record-holder from 2008, Fairwater’s Angela Jones was 14th overall, and led in Les Croupiers’ Caitlin Pearson and San Domenico’s Marcia Gouveia.
Age group winners also included George Harris, Carl Brancher, Rona Davies, Gill Murphy and Mike Murphy.
The organiser is indebted to the Chepstow Harriers who journeyed all the way to the Ewyas Valley to help put on
such a successful event: Sue and Gerry Ashton, Jane and Geoff Bayliss, Joc and Paul Dodd, Rob Hook, Vanessa Lawson
and Rob Brown. And of course to Hanneka van der Werf who mountain-biked over from the Herefordshire side of the mountain to marshal on the very top!

| Push up the Pincyn Sat 26th July Results
The 2014 Pincyn race was another scorcher with the mercury hitting 25C again at the annual Clawddnewydd village showground and not a whisper of a breeze.
This may have contributed to a turnout of just 41 runners. The assembled runners still added a great atmosphere to the village show.
There was an audible groan from the competitors when told the dreaded bail was smaller than previous years so even more unusual jumping
techniques were employed to clear it.
The going underfoot ranged from rock-hard baked fields to ankle sucking bogs as the runners made their way form to Clocaenog and into the
forest. There was no respite from the heat in the trees but that didn’t slow the leading pack: Staffs Moorland’s Gareth Briggs and Craig
Jeffery led out some familiar faces including Jez Brown, Buckley and Eryri’s Craig Jones. Tony Smith made the long journey from Ambleside
to be amongst the top runners; also up there with them to win the ladies was Helsby’s Jayne Joy who was in fine form to finish 6th over all..
Vic Belshaw did the vet 50’s proud finishing strongly in 8th with a good tussle between V60 winner Mario Foschi and V70 winner Peter
Roberts for 18th and 19th place respectively.
The prize giving was once again a no-expense-made affair with Jayne Joy just missing out on anything remotely interesting to claim
the bottle of Toilet Duck! That’s what taking part is all about.

| Elidir Fawr Sunday 27th July Results
After a cloudy morning things brightened
up just in time for the race, with competitors glad of the
river crossing before the final sprint finish. Gareth Wyn
Hughes was first to the top, earning a polka dot "King
of the Mountains" cap on his return, as well as taking
first place overall ahead of Steve Franklin and Martin Cliff
(1st male Vet 40).
Andrea Rowlands took 1st female (and Vet 40) ahead of Louise Beetlestone and Nia
Albison. Adam Haynes was first male Vet 50, but this
will be little consolation given his 7 second
defeat at the hands of his main rival, son Benjamin
Haynes. Stel Farrar took the female Vet 50's honours,
and Maggie Oliver's domination of the female Vet
60's category continues. Course records remain
unchanged.
Thanks to the
landowner for permission to race, and the Vaynol Arms
for their hospitality and acting as HQ. It was
wonderful to see James McQueen back at the top of a mountain
(marshalling); thanks also to Dils and Sioned, and last
but by no means least Mike Blake and Kat Spinney.
The race organiser is leaving Wales shortly, and
so somebody new at the helm is needed if the race is to
continue next year: interested parties to please contact the
Eryri Harriers committee.

Green Green Grass of Home Wed 23rd July 2014 Results
A blazing hot evening saw a field of 90 runners set off over a challenging course that criss-crossed the Clwydians as it made its way up, and back down, Moel Famau before branching off into through some well grown heather and bracken for one last climb before descending to a fast finish.
Indeed is was a fast and very close finish as a tightly fought battle saw Jez Brown just pip Mark Williams to the line to take first place.

| Waun Fach Sat 19th July Results
There may have been some fun runners who paid overmuch attention to weather forecasters and their symbols of donner und blitzen in the Beacons,
(and we know who they are) but the hardcore (and we could see who they were) showed up on Sunday afternoon and were rewarded with excellent
running conditions at Waun Fach - mild wind, a little mist on the top, no rain, uncertain sunshine – and good times across the board in this
inov-8 / WFRA Open Welsh Championships counter.p>
Records are there to be broken: it`s only last year since the course had to be shortened to start at the Cwm Trefforest Riding Centre, but
they took a tumble. Matt Stott won in a sizzling finish, pipping fellow MDC clubmate Chris Jones in a sprint up the final sharp climb to
the finish on Castle Hill. Chris clearly thought Matt had not tried hard enough earlier to have kept these reserves untapped, but the
spectators had seen Matt`s somersault and recovery behind him on the last descent of the Dragon`s Back.
First Lady home was Lauren Jeska from Aberystwyth, who also convincingly broke the 2013 record.p>
There were a few more final sprint finishes to come, but some runners, by now walkers, stopped, out of breath inches from the timing
beam on the finishing line. This did not influence final standings, no more than the complaint registered against an experienced
runner who took a creative line at the first marshalling point, unheeding of vocal protest around him and in flagrant contempt of
the Race Director`s pre-start briefing . At the subsequent stewards` enquiry, it was accepted that the miscreant had probably lost
time with this ploy, that overall placings were unaffected, and so it was decided that no disciplinary decision would be taken.
Few runners appreciate the final gasp up to the finish. It`s a wonderful vantage point for spectators, however, to view the last
downhill stretch and, surprisingly perhaps, to appreciate the audible sounds of laboured breathing and sometimes unsporting
expletives from quite some distance away.
Prize for heaviest footfall goes to Mark Palmer, in third place.
Many thanks are extended to the Riding Centre, for their continued hospitality. To the marshals, Alice Bedwell, Les Williams,
Andy Bray and Dick Finch who struggled to his post while feeling very much under the weather; to Gareth Jones for sweeping

Saturday 12 July 2014 Results
The weather forecast was not good, with rain predicted at 2.30pm when most of the runners would be out on the open moorland between
the summit of Tal y Fan and the Penmaenmawr Stone circle. One past “sweeper” was on holiday in New Zealand, and our possible replacement
declined citing a broken toe. Helen the Race Organiser fancied a trip around the course, but is not good in low cloud, so should we go
ahead with no sweeper? Fifteen minutes before the start, Iorwerth Roberts, a V70 turned up who knew the course, and was likely to be at
the back of the field. Helen found her vest and bum bag, and left instructions for the prize giving, scheduled for 4pm.
The Carnival Queen sounded the hooter and the field was off, with the 2013 winner, Jez Brown soon at the front of the field and
attacking the hill to the youth hostel. Helen and Iorwerth made a steadier start, chatting about the course as they went. The
Cae Coch cut off of 40 minutes was playing on Iorwerth's mind, in 2013 he got there in 36 minutes, would we make it in time, or
be turned back?
The steady start turned into a brisk walk as the 25% road became 33%, and the rest of the 44 runners pulled ahead. The humidity
felt high, as we pressed on, gradually moving to a gentle running pace. The stile at Cae Coch loomed, as did a table with water.
At 34 minutes Iorwerth was happy as he climbed the stile and headed up the grassy path towards the summit.
Reverting to the brisk walk we made our way upwards. At the summit the marshals reported that Jez went through ages ago at speed,
and was now through the last check point and heading towards the finish.
Iorwerth led the way across the open moorland. The recent sunny days meant the boggy bits were fairly dry and good progress was
made over the bilberry bushes. The wild ponies watched as we went by, but the sheep ignored us. The marshals at the Stone Circle
stood out in their high-viz and we turned to head back to Rowen. More gates, more marshals, and another welcome water stop before
we passed the final check point and started the steep descent. We're late for the presentation I thought as we zig-zagged down to
the road and the last mile.
Passing the pub we got lots of applause, a beer would have been nice, but no time as we aimed for Iorwerth's 2013 time of 2:14:02.
Jez had been back for an hour, finishing 3 minutes quicker than in 2013, while Iorwerth crossed the line in 2:12:57.
A big thanks to all our marshals and helpers, and to the rain for staying away until after 6pm.

The fabulous weather inspired Hugh Aggleton to break a new course record of one hour, one minute and 44 seconds. A big well done to the

Moel Siabod Saturday 5th July Results
Moel Siabod 2014 Race Report
Once again we were blessed with a glorious sunny day for the third year in a row. Clearly Capel Curig's reputation for rain needs to be reappraised.
Great turnout of 111 runners were rewarded with no mandatory kit requirement, thanks to Ross Powell for his guidance, clearly the correct decision as skies continued to clear.
Last years winner Felipe Jones of Aberystwyth A/C led the way up the initial forest track but had slipped to second behind Eryri's Math Roberts by the time they
reached the summit halfway point, this in approximately just 32 minutes. Things were to turn around on the descent though with reports of Felipe jumping Gazelle
like (Marshalls words not mine) it was his familiar stride which first came into view at the Finish line.
Felipe's winning time was 47:53 & secured him a third victory in the last 4 years.
In a comfortable 2nd place was Math Roberts in 48:40 followed by a remarkable run by John Spill in 50:59. John is just 16 years old & looks like being a star of
the future. Martin Cliffe, winner in 2012 & runner up last year came in 4th in 52:47 making it 3 in the top 4 for Eryri.
Onto the Women's category, Andrea Rowlands held a slight lead on Jackie Lee (both Eryri) at the summit. As they made up overall
places on the descent it was Jackie who prevailed to come home 1st in 56:12. She is now unbeatable in this years British Championships.
Andrea secured second spot in 57:49 continuing her remarkable comeback after giving birth just a year ago. In 3rd with a time of
61:06 was Caitlin Rice of Glossopdale Harriers.
Finishers headed for a cooling dip in the Afon Llugwy, then off to the Capel Curig Festival field where Gaby's Goulash & Sandwiches
from the Tyn y Coed awaited them. At the prize giving Ross received warm applause before he announced the Category winners, MU.18
John Spill, MU40 Felipe Jones, MO40 Martin Cliffe, MO50 Dafydd Roberts, MO60 Alan French, MO70 John Morris, FU40 Jackie Lee, FO40
Andrea Rowlands, FO50 Emma Collins & FO60 Maggie Oliver. First Local was Leo Scheltinga in 58:04, 20th overall, winning the Mike
Cousins Memorial Shield.
We also had two competitors in the Junior Race, Mike Spill winning the U12's & Gethin Davies the U14's.
To cap a wonderful day a team of Male Fell Runners took on the locals in a tug of war. Amazingly despite their efforts in the race
itself they came from behind, largely due to their 'appointing' a manic coach who I will not name & shame here,
to prevail 2:1 victors to great cheers & laughter all around.

| Tregarth Trot Wed 25th June 2014 Results
The race went ahead on Wednesday June 25th and apart from 4 runners (1 man who was in the lead and then later on 1 local woman with 2 following her) who missed
seeing the tapes the other side of a kissing gate and got on the wrong footpath, 40 runners completed the course.
We were lucky with the weather as it stayed dry for the race. The winner of the men’s race was Karl Ashworth U/A in a time of 48.58 and the ladies
winner was Kate Worthington of Eryri in 59.10. Thanks to over 20 marshalls who gave up their time freely to help out on the evening, also to Trefor Jones
for hacking the bracken so the runners could have a clear route through, the sponsor Zac Laraman for paying for the trophies and running numbers and Mike
Blake for helping mark the course, doing the signage and being a sweeper on the day. The proceeds from the event were donated to the Cylch Meithrin in Tregarth.

| Hot Foot Up Fammau Wed 18th June Results
A lovely evening for this year's Hotfoot up Famau race, with crystal clear views over the Vale of Clwyd and distant Snowdonia.
The route was overgrown in places, particularly at the bottom of Nant y Ne, so it was harder work than usual to plough through
the ferns. The men's race was won by Jez Brown of Buckley, with Victoria Whitehead of Denbigh recording an excellent first win
in the female race. Dave Sargent (Eden) and Lawrence Eccles (Penny Lane Striders) were second and third overall. Alice Robinson
(Tattenhall) and Kate Lightfoot (Tattenhall) came second and third in the ladies race.

| Tal Y Mignedd Saturday 21st June
"For those of you who ran the Pedol Pennant on Saturday and didn't feel you spent suffice time on the Nantlle Ridge, then Saturday's second running of Râs Tal y Mignedd will once again allow you to reach the summit's giant obelisk. Another classic race in the making, the route is a simple out and back and considerably longer than most Tuesday evening races of recent years. Starting at the farm at Tal y Mignedd Isaf the route will follow the farm track for 0.8 miles before violently ascending a goliath 1800ft in just over a mile. On tapping Queen Victoria's obelisk the the route returns along the same kamikaze descent before arriving back at the farm. Estimate winning time is 37 minutes 45 seconds. There will also be under 8 / 10 / 12 and 14 junior races. (Course map in Events Section)
Once again the farmers of the Nantlle Valley are being extremely welcoming and the farmer's wife will be serving a collection of hot drinks, refreshments and cakes before and after the race. All proceeds will go to the local Ysgol Baladeulyn."

Also 45 juniors in the caernarfon tyres champs and some late runs being put in could see the current standings change at the last race - based from the Heights in Llanberis.

Longtown, Herefordshire. Sunday 15th June 2014 - The 9th Darrens Dash event
After a blistering day on Saturday, race day dawned with thin low cloud lying on the hills. This was forecast to burn off but
lingered until mid-morning to be replaced by a mix of sunshine and cloud. Good weather for running when combined with a few
dry days to harden the previously soggy surface. The hot weather meant that the bottles of Celtic Vale water from event sponsor
and local business Black Mountain Mineral Water company were in high demand!
Entry numbers were slightly down on last year at 74. Unfortunately the forecast high temperatures deterred a number of
Cani Cross runners fearful for the wellbeing of their dogs. Only the contingent from Ilkeston Running Club who were mad
enough to run the day after taking part in the ‘Man Vs Horse’ event. Mind you, they had a good motivation, running in
memory of their clubmate Darren who shares a name with the distinctive crags forming the skyline above Longtown that
give their name to the race. Whilst their sanity may have been questioned their commitment couldn’t and nor could that
of the fell running novices who came across from the ‘flatlands’ of Cambridgeshire to try their hand at this unique
dimension of running.
A minor change to this year’s route did not deviate from the requirement to run through the Olchon brook, whilst
the early spring rains had also added a marshy section at the end of the steep climb up through farmland. The high
temperatures necessitated a water stop at this point which many runners took advantage of before the relentless diagonal
climb to the top of the Darrens crags. All the effort was rewarded with magnificent views and a gently undulating ridge
taking them towards their descent path which provided a swift route to the valley finish. First time ‘Dasher’ James Smith
of Black Pear Joggers, Worcester, led strongly from the start and flew down the descent slopes to set a new course record
of 43.12, whilst Niki Morgan from Chepstow Harriers made her way confidently through the field to finish in an impressive
53.34 and set another course record. Simon Downs and his dog Figaro were the first finishers in the Cani Cross event in
a time of 76.54. The ‘first local’ trophy was re-instated, congratulations to Archie Gemmell who was awarded the trophy
after completing his first ‘Dash’ in 63.50.
A special mention to Chris Hawkins (of Forest of Dean Athletic Club) who hobbled to the end of the course with his dog Maya supported by local man Harry Franklin, despite sustaining an ankle injury.

“Well I never thought I’d see the day when we had more juniors than seniors! Well done to parents for getting them there and helping to marshal. In the Joe Brown’s race, well done again to John Spill only 28 secs outside the overall course record. Impressive when you consider Ifan’s descent record was 5:48! Other records to go were Bronwen Jenks knocking 22 seconds off her own FU18 record, while Don Williams took over 7 1/2 minutes off the V70. Meanwhile Stell Farrer and Ellie Sallisbury continue to do battle in the F50. Mike."

| Boar’s Head Hill Race Wed 4th June Results
Despite the appallingly grey and rainy day 220 runners assembled at the Boar’s Head. This was the second largest field the race has ever had – 226
turned up in 1993 – and had the weather been better then I think that figure would easily have been surpassed. As we haven’t had a field like that
for over ten years we were taken a little by surprise and ran out of numbers, having to resort to hand-crafted felt-tip equivalents for the final
twenty at registration.
As it had rained for most of the day there was plenty of mud, the downhill grass was suicidally slippery and there was no chance of Lloyd Taggart’s
record being beaten but Simon Harding, fresh from a superb victory at Duddon, and Damien Nicholls both had excellent runs and a tight personal contest
to take the first two places within one second of each other, with last year’s winner, Andy Lamont, less than a minute behind.
Diane McVey ran very well to come home nearly two minutes clear of the next two ladies, Kristy Gill and Kerrie Wood Doyle, who had their own personal
tussle, being separated by only six seconds at the finish.
The evening was very much Macclesfield’s – the Club fielded twenty-nine runners (being outclassed in numbers by Wilmslow, who produced forty !!) and
went home having claimed seven individual prizes and BOTH team prizes; very well done.
For those readers who are statistically minded the sport continues to progress steadily into geriatricity, with no fewer than 67% of the competitors
being in the vets categories – with two of them being V70s it won’t be long before the sight of a V100 category appears on a results sheet somewhere !
One competitor tore her number up in a fit of self-loathing, which was fair enough – I sulked in the campervan for twenty-four hours after failing
miserably on Jura – but it would have been nice if she’d reported her retirement to the finish team. Buxton Man not only lost his number but couldn’t
remember what it had been, which led to a temporary confusion but otherwise everything went off efficiently enough despite the odd navigational and
route choice hiccups – one lady was found exploring a vast rhododendron plantation – and most of the field enjoyed the hospitality of the Boar’s Head,
which was delighted with the extra numbers.
I’ve managed to keep the entry fee at £3 for millenia and this year’s extra runners kept us in the black but as I can’t assume those numbers every
year and as the race costs have escalated over the last few years I’m afraid that I’ll have to raise the entry fee to £4 from next year to keep the
race finances in a healthy state – sorry.
Many thanks to the marshals and the support team, some of whom got very wet indeed, and thanks also to all the competitors – I hope you had a good
time and look forward to seeing you next year.

| Steam Bunny Stomp Saturday 10th May Results
We thought conditions last year were bad but this year proved to be far worse with strong winds and persistent rain.
It was not possible to setup the registration tent and we had to adlib setting up registration in an old bus shelter.
Conditions were that bad that some runners turned up for registration but decided not to run and returned home. Despite this
36 runners brave souls set off to confront the demanding course and atrocious weather, there was one casualty early on
(calf strain) this runner pulled out and returned to the start/finish without further mishap. Due to the conditions no
records were broken this year and a time limit was set at the first check point to ensure marshals were not left out
on the open mountain longer than necessary.
The last 2 runners cut short at the 1st checkpoint returning home with the marshals, 1 runner got slightly lost
but managed to find his way home. All other runners returned home safe and sound but washed out.
A big thank you to all marshals for their support and commitment in such atrocious conditions.

Last year’s second and third placers, Matt Stott and Mark Palmer, drew away from the chasing pack by Checkpoint 2 on Mynydd Llangorse.
The duo gradually extended the lead to nine minutes, with Matt consolidating his lead over Mark to 40 seconds by the finish back at Cwmdu village.
Women’s winner Jackie Lee journeyed down from North Wales and broke Lauren Jeska’s record from last year while finishing fifth overall.
This third counter in the Paul Fosh Auctions’ sponsored South Wales Fell Championships took place on a muggy but rain-free day with fairly
good under-foot conditions. The sun finally emerged as the weary runners sat on the village green enjoying cake and tea.
Age group winners were Rhian Probert, Martin Shaw, Rona Davies, Mark Palmer, Gary Gunner and Rob West.

Firstly I would like to thank the Golden Lion and the marshals as without their help the race would not take place. Weather conditions were ideal for
me as organiser but may be the runners would have liked it a bit cooler in the gully.

There was an abundance of talented athletes on show this year as the race was the first counter in the Inov8/WFRA Open Welsh
Championships and the Paul Fosh Auctions/WFRA South Wales Series. The race also played host to the East Wales Championships.
The 107 starters were forced to endure gale force wind and intermittent rain during the 5.5 mile 3100ft ascent race which summits
both Cribyn and Pen Y Fan. Visibility was reasonable but the strong winds and rain created a challenging race for both organisers and runners.
Felipe Jones first attempt of the race was a victorious one. Felipe of Aberystwyth A/C won the race by a comfortable margin in a time of
55.04. Pete Ryder of Brycheiniog was 2nd in 56.12 and Simon Barnby completed the podium in a time of 57.29. The MV40 category was closely
contested with Preseli’s Carwyn Phillips pipping Paul Beeson to the post by 4 secs in 64.43. Mark Palmer of Mynydd Du, 4th overall took
the MV50 prize finishing in 57.56. First MV60 was Gary Gunner of Croft Ambrey in 80.24. MDC’s Robert West thoroughly deserved his MV70
prize after taking an alternative route off Pen Y Fan making his race a little longer.
Eryri Harriers runner Jackie Lee came in search of Helen Fines course record but the tough conditions saw her dip just over a minute
outside of it in 62.56 finishing 7th overall. Second lady in was Mercia’s Mel Price in a time of 64.51. Andrea Roberts, also of Eryri
Harriers was 3rd home in 67.34. Local lady Rhian Probert took the 1st FV40 prize in 76.29 and MDC’s Alice Bedwell was 1st FV50 in 80.21.
Eryri runner Maggie Oliver, not content with the 5.5 mile course briefly joined Rob and a small number of runners on the alternative
route choice before exploring more of the area alone. Maggie sneaked up on race timekeeper John Chidlow from the opposite direction to claim her FV60 prize.
The winning team was Mercia Fell Runners, Tom Roo, Mel Price and Virgil Barton. Apologies from the race organiser for the absence of the team prize presentation due to a mix up with the results.
Runners were treated to a limited offering of hot beverages but ample amounts of cake at the post race gathering. Thanks to Mynydd Du Fell Runners for their support and to everyone that helped out on the day.

" Swtan" Heritage Museum hosted the 6th Mynydd Swtan race , all proceeds
going to the charity " Cyfeillion Swtan ". No beach start this year due to ongoing storm

Sugar Loaf Sat 19th April 2014 Results
It was a cloudy cold start to the day but the sun soon broke through as the runners gathered on the start line.
The 2014 Sugar Loaf fell race saw a record number of entries, with 137 runners registering on the day.
It was planned for a bottle of Sugar Loaf ale to be handed to each finisher as they crossed the line however
only 100 bottles were ordered, so runners were encouraged at the start to 'run for their beer' as there would
not be enough to go around.
The course record was very nearly broken with Hugh Aggleton taking the lead but being overtaken on the descent
by Robert Barnby with Pete Ryder not too far behind in 3rd. Mark Palmer took first Vet 50 and the first 4 runners
finished with less than 60 seconds between them.
The ladies’ race was a clear cut win by Hannah Jarvis , again less than a minute between her time and the
course record. Niki Morgan was a few minutes behind in second closely followed by Emily Hoffman. First FV40
was Lou Summers.
Team prizes went to Mynydd Du for both the ladies’ and the men’s teams.

The 33rd Llanbedr to Blaenafon fell race saw 89 entrants setting off from the village of Llanbedr in damp conditions.
Although not as cold as last year, the clouds were low enough to ensure that none of the spectacular views usually
enjoyed were visible, which was a real shame as some had come from miles away to take part. Hugh Aggleton of MDC
won the race in 2 hours 10 minutes, which was 5 minutes quicker than his winning time of last year, but 2 minutes
short of his time in the 2012 event. As per the previous 2 years, Hugh was followed in by Mark Palmer of Mynydd Du,
2 hrs 17 mins. Mark is a veteran of this race, having competed a remarkable 14 times previously, winning it outright
7 times. Third man home was Chris Jones, also of MDC, in 2hrs 19.First lady home was newcomer Hannah Jaris
(Mynydd Du), in 2hrs 40, well ahead of the 2nd lady Katie Roby of MDC who finished in 2hrs 51. Just on minute
later, the 2012 winner Anna Bartlett finished to take 3rd Lady position.2 of the entrants in the inaugural
event back in 1980 also took part – Dave Hayward now of Chepstow Harriers, and Les Williams Eryri, finishing
in 3 hrs 20 and 3.22 respectively, 2nd and 3rd in their V60+ category.The last finisher came in at 4hrs 27 –
and there were 5 non finishers. Once again all the participants enjoyed a hearty buffet to help them warm up
again and replenish their energy reserves. The organisers would like to thank Blaenafon Rugby Club for their
fantastic support for the event.

Weather conditions clear with cold breeze; dry underfoot. 58 senior finishers for this classic short fell race over the northern
Carneddau tops of Moel Wnion, Gyrn , Llefn and Moel Faban. 5 junior race finishers up and down moel Faban.
Close race upfront throughout the race with just 28 seconds separating first three at the finish line . 17 year old Staffs Moorlands
runner Max Wainwright ran from the front to victory in 36:52 , Dylan Jones (Eryri) 2nd 37:11 and first over 40 and John Parkinson also Eryri 2nd over 40 in 37:20.
Andrea Rowlands first woman, 16th overall and well clear in 41:52 . Jenny Heming getting stronger with every race first over 40 and 24th overall in 44:18.
Junior race won by Daniel Soles in 12:15 with his Dad Dave winning over 50s race. Mention also for the Starling family, Billy 12th overall in 41:12 and 2nd U18,
Dad Andrew 40th and brother Joe 2nd in the junior race.

While Math’s away the mice will play. 1st win for Gwyn and 2nd win for Bronwen,
the latter now holding the U16 and U18 records in both races. Second place overall
saw a return by John Spill, 4’ taller and 4 yrs since he last raced, watch this
space! Other highlights were John Morris, two V70 records on the trot and Sion
Jones in the U14. Sion was once again in the leading pack with the seniors before
turning off and setting a new U14 record again. Thanks to all the helpers and local

South Wales Winter League 2013/14 Results
The Winter League, originated and managed so ably since 1992 by Martin Lucas and
John Sweeting, was passed into the nervous hands of a small committee when the
distinguished founders decided to retire at the end of the 2012/3 season.
Three new races were commissioned to blend with some old favourites to produce a wide-ranging eight-race challenge that attracted 267 runners over the season. But only 35 ran the five-race trophy-scoring minimum, four of them women.
To continue the gender statistics, 48 women competed in at least one race – 18% of the total compared with 21% in 2009/10, and 12% in 1993/4 (randomly selected years admittedly from a previous report). And to bore the reader a little more, 15% of race entrants this season were female.
So who came away with an exclusive Series Winners Tshirt?
Ben Moon of MDC was overall winner by 15 points over Mynydd Du’s Rich Johnson, with 5 points over Neath’s Alex Lewis with the pack baying only 3 points behind.
Katie Beecher of Les Croupiers took the women’s shirt ahead of Chepstow’s Niki Morgan and Mynydd Du’s Jan Richards.
Age Group winners were Rich Johnson in the M40s ahead of Julian Boon (FOD) and Dom Shields (San Domenico).
Niki Morgan led the F40 group followed by Jan Richards and Chepstow’s Karen Elvers.
The M50 cat. was the most keenly contested, with all depending on the final race at Dare Valley Country Park. Pete Sowerby of Brecon had to run out of his shorts to overhaul SWRR’s Kevin Hagley, with Steve Harrhy (Lliswerry) third.
The two Steve’s from Hereford continued their keen rivalry for the M60 shirt, with Mr Littlewood shading it over Mr Herington. Chepstow’s Neil Grant was third.
And finally, seven runners ran all eight races, thus earning a coveted Walter Winterleague mug!

Results
Will we ever get decent weather for this race? Mist and rain didn’t seem too bad at 1000 feet but a
good call by Ross on the summit where the wind was also a factor and 5 marshals huddling turned the
runners straight back – a decision echoed by all the runners on their return. JP knowing Matt’s
descending speed had opened a gap on the climb and managed to keep his lead to put another new
name on the winner’s trophy. In the ladies, Jenny (“I’m not fit yet”) managed to drop those who
had been following her to take 8th overall, eight places ahead of Denbigh’s Emma Collins.
In the U14s Talysarn’s Sion Jones frightened a few seniors, only JP beating him to turn around
at moel Tryfan and taking a minute and a half off the record in the process. Ben Grantham and
Mared Evans winning the U10s. Thanks to Ross and Sheila, Sioned and Tina, Mair and Alwyn
who braved the elements to marshall and Pauline in the school for making the panads. Mike"

Results
The best evening in the race’s history and a 3rd win for Math following his top ten
placing in the Irish British Champs race three days previous. The ladies produced
another new winner on the course, Bangor Uni’s Becky Taylor taking it in a fine
24th overall. Whilst in the Caernarfon Tyres Junior Champs U8 victories went to
Jake Roberts and Kyla Cain, U10s Conner Roberts and Georgia Parkinson, U12s
Michael Spill and Ruby Wood and U14s Sion Jones and Keeryn Wiiliams. Thanks
