32 pioneering souls turned up to tackle the first ever Fan Brycheiniog Fell Race. The fine weather – good visibility and some sunny spells made the navigational element less demanding than expected. Route choice did however come into play with the final results. A recce (or two) proving beneficial. Looking at position changes from one checkpoint to another it seems there were 4 or 5 places where gains could be made on fellow competitors.

This quiet and rarely visited area of the Brecon Beacons has some excellent running on unique and unspoilt terrain, and fine views from the escarpment over Lyn Y Fan Fawr (if you have time to look away from the ground beneath your feet).

Race HQ was based at the recently refurbished Tafarn Y Garreg. Delicious snacks were provided after and many availed themselves of the fine ale on sale.

Dan Doherty led from start to finish and completed the distance in a blistering time of 1:17:41, nearly 8 minutes ahead of 2nd place man Mark Palmer. First lady home was Katie Beecher, 1:36:58.

Thanks of course to the helpers who made the event happen: Dave Austin, Rob Brown, Dick Finch, Dil and John Vernon. All had a long walk in.     Paul/Joyce Dodd
