From 2006 the Arenig Fawr race was run as a medium 6.7 mile race. During that time I have always wanted to extend the route to include Arenig’s neighbour Moel Llyfnant and was never happy with the start being one mile away from the race headquarters.

This year the race was changed. It started and finished at the Arenig quarry. Moel Llyfnant was included, the distance was increased to 13km (8.1 miles) and the overall climb was almost doubled. It became a very tough medium race not suitable for inexperienced runners and this must have been one of the reasons for a modest field of 33 runners. Weather conditions were almost perfect: dry, clear and breezy.

The leading positions were closely contested and Richard Mellon of Bowland, map in hand, was the winner, setting a record for the new course of 1:34:06. Mary Gillie was first female home in 1:55:07

There was the usual congenial post race get together with refreshments, food, homemade cakes and prizes for everyone. Runners’ comments about the new route were very favourable.

Sincere thanks to the many helpers, in particular Kath, Wynn and Pat, the marshals, Team Dolly who turned out again to man checkpoints and provide radio communications and to Running Bear for supplying prizes at a generous discount.
