It was thankfully dry for the Blorenge race (2.5m/1400ft) this year, although recent rainfall meant the descent through the woods and tunnel was slippier than ever. But there were no casualties and most people seemed to enjoy a short sharp competitive outing to end the Open Welsh Championships.

The men's race was exciting with a lead group breaking away on the climb- Martin Shaw made the best descent to challenge the record (possibly set on a shorter course?) for Mynydd Du, finishing in 24.19. Matt Collins was second in 24.51, but the finish came just in time, as he was rapidly closed down by Pete Ryder (Brycheiniog) and only one second separated them Then came two excellent runs for Chepstow- Paul Murrin, 4th in 25.54, and then first junior Matt Stott (27.29)- one to watch for the future.

Andrea Rowlands made the trip south to represent Eryri, win the race and seal the Women's Open Welsh prize. She capitalized on her ascending strength to dominate a good field, coming home in 32.49, from Louise Emery (35.27) and Joanne Moore (36.39). Naomi Prosser was first junior female.

Tim Clarke from Hereford was first vet to finish, in 28.33. The MV50 category was harder fought- organiser Chris Taylor (Mercia) prevailed in 30.58, closely followed by Peter Gwilliams and frustrated descender John Aggleton (MDC). Gary Gunner's 35.28 was enough to take top honours for the MV60s, with Les Williams and Dick Finch right behind. Peter Norman outran Harry Franklin to be first MV70.

Sue Ashton (Chepstow) had an excellent run to be first vet, almost 3rd overall, and as ever first FV50. She beat the first FV40, Eryri's Ellie Salisbury, by 2 minutes. Maggie Oliver, also for Eryri was the FV60 winner.
