BLACK MOUNTAINS RACE 26TH SEPTEMBER 2009       Results       Pics from Alastair Tye

Weather conditions were excellent for the race this year- dry underfoot with perfect visibility, though it was a little hot for some.

An intriguing mens field quickly became a duel between Mark Palmer (Mynydd Du) and Lloyd Taggart (Dark Peak) as they pulled away from the rest of the field on the first climb up Pen Cerrig Calch. By the summit of Pen y Gadair Fawr, Lloyd held a lead of about 2 minutes, and despite taking a slower line on Chwarel y Fan, was still ahead at Bal Mawr. However, in the latter stages Mark's post-Mont Blanc strength endurance came into play, as he took the lead ascending Crug Mawr, and pulled away to win by 3 min 41 secs in a time of 2.27.10. This excellent run beat Billy Bland's longstanding MV40 record- which looks even better as the winner is an MV45!

Illness prevented Eryri's Jackie Lee from making it 7 in a row in this race. Although still finishing in a respectable (if PW) time of 3.10.22, it allowed Helen Fines to clock up a win in 2.57.24 for Calder Valley. Phoebe Webster (Aberystwyth) was 3rd in 3.29.30.

First senior male, and 3rd overall was Hugh Aggleton from MDC in 2.46.03, followed by a very sick and below-par Rob Gordon, also Mynydd Du . Chris Taylor (Mercia) won the MV50 class with 3.14.58, and Dick Finch the MV60 (3.46.44) for Chepstow. Chepstow Harriers also had the depth to take the team prize, despite Mynydd Du's two top-5 finishers.
