LLYN-Y-FAN RACE 13/09/08

Martin Shaw made up for the disappointment of missing out on World Trophy selection by landing only the second outright win of his career in the Llyn-y-Fan race (5.5m/2000ft). By finishing in 42.47, less than a minute from Mark Palmer's record, he gained a comfortable victory over junior Carwyn Thomas of Sarn Helen (44.27). In fact there were four U23s in the field of 25, with another- Chepstow Harrier Matt Stott- taking 3rd overall. 4th and 1st MV40 was Tim Hindle (Brecon).

Last year's women's winner Naomi Law had to settle for second this time, with Helen Fines finishing 5th overall and first woman for Calder Valley in 53.54. Chepstow's ever-consistent Sue Ashton was 3rd and 1st FV50. Naomi, Sue, Martin Lucas (1st MV50) and Elvet Jones (1st MV60) all finished within a minute of one another, but overall the small field quickly spread out. However, the bright sunshine and clear blue skies meant for easy route-finding and a thoroughly enjoyable race with something for everyone- a long gradual climb, fast ridge running, a short steep climb, a very steep descent and some fast grassy terrain.
